Mr. Amos Debose

Passed away August 1, 2020. Viewing Friday, August 7, 2020 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at H. M. Martin Funeral Home.

Amos DeBose, Jr. was born on May 30,1930 in Marigold Mississippi to Amos and Ruby DeBose. He was 1 of 11 children born to this union. Amos at a young age accepted Christ and was baptized.

Amos DeBose enlisted in the United States Army, Combat Division, in 1952, where he drove various military vehicles and traveled extensively throughout Europe.  He received his Honorable Discharge in 1954 after an exemplary service.

Amos DeBose married Mary Bradford in Marigold, Mississippi in 1953, and of this union there were born 5 children, Amos II, Rosa, Anthony, Alicia, and Alphonso.  After serving in the Army, it was hard for Amos to find work, so his brother Lonzo sent for him to come up North to Cleveland, OH.  After establishing a secure place for his family, he sent for his wife and family to join him.

Amos enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at bar-be-cues during the holidays, activities at Luke Easter Park, drinking and playing cards.

Amos was a quiet man, a man of few words, but he truly loved his family.  He was a proud “Service Man” who had many lifelong friends.  Amos will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Ruby DeBose, siblings. Ada Moore, Irene Buckhanon, Juanita Reed, Sadie Hannah, Alvin DeBose, Oscar Debose, and Lonzo DeBose.

On Saturday, August 1, 2020, Amos DeBose Jr. was called to his eternal rest.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his friend and beloved mother of his children, Mary DeBose, 2 daughters, Rosa Debose (Cleve, OH) Alicia DeBose (Cleve, OH), 3 sons, Amos DeBose II (Jacqueline) (Cleve, OH), Anthony DeBose (Cleve, OH) and Alphonso DeBose (Petra) (Cleve, OH).  He had 11 grandchildren, Ashauntè, Kimberly, Tanisha, Natasha, Antoinette, Dominque, Vanessa (Michael), Aliyah, Katrina, Rebecca and Natalie, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Rose Marie Collier and Ida Harper both from California, and 1 brother, Anderson ( Billie) (Cleve, OH) and host of family and friends.

First giving honor to God who is ever present in my life. I am very aware of how He gives and takes a way in due season.

As He gave us my dad. How do I say farewell as you journey to where you came from. You are now in the presence of our Maker.

My dad a walking definition of a husband, provider, protector, father, brother and uncle that I witnessed first hand as well as being so much to so many more.

A PRACTICAL MAN WHO PUT FAMILY FIRST
As a child, one of 11 children in an always very close knit family, you had a beautiful mother who worked as amazing cook and a humble and practical father who was a US Army veteran who served during World War II and also taught school and Sunday school in Mississippi delta region.

You served in the US Army as well during the Korean War and returned home to Merigold Mississippi, where you met my mother who had befriended your sisters and family, and you became her protector, courted and married her.

After your oldest brother settled in Cleveland Ohio working I’m a foundry as a supervisor, you decided to leave Mississippi to come to Cleveland too. Leaving a very tearful young wife who you promised you would send for as soon as you were able to. And you did.

Coming from a tiny town in the south of just a few hundred people to a large and growing metropolitan city had its challenges for a black man, my oldest brother was born and then my sister, three more children came after that; me being the 2nd of two girls and life changed dramatically for us all as the turbulent mid 50’s and 60’s exploded onto the scene.

    Wow dad what a life!!
Even in those days. What you endured to protect us; And you did! I’m forever grateful.

    A COOL DAD
You used to like to dress nice, loved Stacy Adams shoes and nice hats. You rolled with the lined silk socks, shorts and a nice hat club as you got older and loved you old spice!

Though you and mom divorced when I was still a small child, you always had nice cars, spent lots of time with us kids, took us places with the sounds of the 60s and 70s playing as we rode (you loved soul music) and so much of your family came to Cleveland we always visited. So many family gatherings and photos of fun times.
You had nice friends too, a gentlemen’s club of sorts all hard working, nice dressers who always gave us kids money to go get treats from the mom and pop stores.

    A SMART DAD
You worked so hard dad and you were very good with your hard earned money giving me the best financial advise “always save something” you told me.

You saw us all through many graduations and we got the things we needed always and even some of the things we wanted and mom could always call you and you came through. And you didn’t have to borrow it, you had it. You didn’t go on debt for much of anything.
Not rich, you just had the basics down pat that a man takes care of his family.

You kept me in the cute clothes by letting me pick the clothes you bought, you got me a 15 speed bike when 10 speeds were popular enough. You got me my first credit card. All out of adoration.
I know I was loved by you dad.

    A GENTLEMAN
I never remember you spanking us kids. Nor yelling just thump the boys in the head and get flustered and mix our names up and cuss a very little in disagreement nothing too profane.

I’ve never seen you disrespect a woman or children either. God rewarded you with three son’s who are gentlemen too.

    A LOVING GRANDPA
Your love extended to my children and grandchildren and when their dads didn’t YOU did. We could always go to you for a loan, you quietly sat bags of groceries on back porch steps too.
I know you knew we adored you. All five of my daughters and all nine of my grandchildren you met think the world of you.

I could go on about how beautiful you were and the the way you left the world a better place and left a ginormous legacy but I won’t because our Maker gives rewards to the just and I pray He has something for you my dear dad.
